Backlash Against Gays Roils Belgrade

The first gay rights parade since 2001 in Belgrade, Serbia led to the worst domestic violence in over a decade in the former Yugoslavian republic as the Balkans prepared for the impending visit of reputed lesbian and Wiccan, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The coincidence nor timing of the two events was certainly not lost on either the participants in the confrontation nor the Serbian government which undoubtedly felt doubly compelled to limit the political damage and present itself to the EU as a model of tolerance. Nonetheless the clashes of heavily armed security forces with thousands of right wing Serbs, orthodox religious, and roving gangs of skinheads unleashed chaos in the streets of the Serbian capital which left the streets littered with overturned and burned automobiles and broken glass and lined with gutted businesses defaced with anti-EU graffiti. US Ambassador Mary Warlick attended and warmly endorsed the march which abruptly ended in face of the unrelenting opposition. Damages were estimated at more than one million Euros.

Once again the incredible divisiveness of the international gay agenda was on full display for all to see, openly abetted and encouraged by the US political establishment in the persons of Warlick and Clinton with the expected and resultant fractious discord exposing and exploiting the fissures of irreconcilable and colliding social strata. The resulting black eye for Republica Serbska was undoubtedly an intended result of the ongoing American geopolitical isolation of the Serbs still bristling from the dismemberment of their nation, the ceding of Kosovo and the devastating bombing at the hands of US/NATO led forces under General Wesley Clark in the early 90s Serbo-Croatian conflict during the regime of Mrs. Clinton's husband.

The events in the staunchly orthodox and adamantly anti-western Serbia were greeted with warnings from the European Union that such outrages would delay and possibly pre-empt any Serbian entry into the EU. They also signaled a growing backlash against the queer movement which up to this point has carried out its colorful and provocative displays of gay exhibitionism throughout the Western Hemispheric capitals. In the midst of the unrest generated by the economic crisis and growing social breakdown it can only be expected that such scapegoating of minority groups will increase exponentially as a renewed enthusiasm for chauvinist, nationalist and right wing agendas grows. The characteristic intoxication of paranoia which thrives in increasing social and economic upheavals unerringly seeks out those projected alien menaces which threaten to destroy the perceived social order. So far in the present crisis the US itself has remained immune from such pathological outbursts of irrational mob violence, but they are not long in coming, and not unlike the Belgrade queers, so many who presently command the streets under armed guard will likely soon be the unfortunate recipients of the anarchic and grotesque "justice" which dwells just on the other side of those same streets and the paramilitary police lines.

Are you saying that an anti-gay backlash is inevitable in the U.S., and that the subsoil of the American psyche has long had something secretly anti-gay growing in it, which will flash forth suddenly, due to economic and social upheaval?

Judging from the global rise of the right, you just may be right in your predictions:http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/LK10Aa01.html?sms_ss=blogger&at_xt=4cdc41d125f6c934,0

@ anoymous #2 many thanks for the great article(!) at Asia Times which is consistently a great alternative source for a balanced and penetrating analysis of the West whose media outlets are so many times so myopically involved in chasing their own tails that they fail to see the "forest for the trees".

@ anonymous #1 Unfortunately we live in a society where there is a pronounced proclivity for the projection of ones own unrecognized inner capacities for evil onto the most convenient scapegoat at hand, which we then seek to destroy. The deep secret and long abiding fear of the queer is one of the most inviting targets for such malignancy. As fear spreads like an irresistible contagion, the superficial social mores which hold our society together like a fragile membrane of integuments will be stripped away to reveal the unrestrained violence and bestiality which lurk in the deeper recesses of the unconscious unamenable to reason. "The sleep of reason breeds monsters"
